Quietly maintaining a top mineral leasing and management presence since the company’s first iron ore discovery in 1892 on Minnesota’s Mesabi Iron Range has been the hallmark of SMR. But that is changing. SMR has entered into an enterprising new direction: While maintaining the focus on its core business, we are strategically positioning for the long term. Diverse new projects already underway are shaping the new face of SMR. SMR’s asset portfolio and proven management team are the platform for the company’s new business strategy, designed to enhance shareholder returns now and for future generations by:
- Expanding our operating portfolio of businesses in mining and metals
- Diversifying into other end-markets and other steel-related minerals
- Growing our asset base through acquisitions and joint ventures
- Focusing on long-term asset growth through research and development
- Utilizing our team’s experience, capabilities, and credibility to execute the downstream business strategy
SMR’s new direction has already yielded an exciting patent pending process with transformational promise. In a joint venture known as Encore, SMR has partnered with J. M. Longyear LLC, a well known and highly respected Michigan natural resource-based business founded by John M. Longyear in the late 1800s. Along with an expanded asset base of natural resources and expert staff, Encore has immediate access to a world class research and testing facility, complete with pilot plant facilities for use in the development of commercial processes for minerals and value added metals. SMR is vigorously developing a growing number of distinct value opportunities. With purpose, SMR is on the move, positioning strategically with a clear vision for the future, laying out its new course with confidence, creativity, growth. |
